This book was everything.
I am an emotional person. It is not unusual for tears to run wild and free upon the plains of my face. But every now and again, I come across art that leaves me drenched in feelings. I am talking ugly, happy, boo-hoo crying.
That is what Jane Igharo's debut YA novel, With Love, Miss Americanah, had me looking like while I read this beautiful book.
This is the kind of story that hits home. It took me back in time to my first experience with romantic love. I felt echoes of that jubilation as I read this lovely YA romance about discovering oneself and doing so with new people, even in the wake of devastating loss.
The way the protagonist, Enore Adesuwa, navigates her transition to a new country, the new shape of her family, and new friends in a community so incredibly different from the home she, her mother, and sister left behind is realistic, wholesome, and motivating.
Enore embarks on a believable and honest journey from being content on the sidelines to finding the courage to take center stage in her life. The family, friendship, and romantic dynamics are incredible, and Enore's relationship with her sister especially made my day!
I highly, highly, highly, recommend this read and eagerly await whatever Jane Igharo writes next.
